Proteins are macronutrients. 1 They are complex, large structures made up of smaller units called amino acids (AA).1 Amino acids are the body’s basic building blocks. Around 20 different types of these smaller units exist, and can be merged to form a protein. In fact, their sequence dictates each protein’s structure along with its corresponding function.2
They play critical roles in our organisms. Actually, they are responsible for cells’ most work and growth, and are also necessary for the regulation of the body’s organs and tissues, as well as structure and function.2
Throughout life, dietary protein requirements vary. Proteins are found in both, animal and plant sources.
Proteins from animal sources mainly include fish, meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy. Animal proteins are known to be complete, meaning that they deliver all the amino acids (AA) a body needs.
On the other hand, plant-based proteins mainly include vegetables, beans and grains.
However, plant-based proteins are incomplete proteins, they may lack one or more essential amino acids. Hence, when on a vegan diet, combining a variety of plant-based proteins is fundamental to ensure the consumption of all required essential amino acids.3
