Known as structural components of most tissues, essential fatty acids, are crucially important for cell membrane production. Mainly, the retina, the brain, and various neural tissues are highly rich in LC-PUFA1. More importantly, DHA (an LCPUFA) greatly improves cognitive functions like visual acuity maturation, which makes it a conditionally essential nutrient for adequate neurodevelopment in humans1.
It is crucially important for brain development and visual acuity in both pre and postnatal periods.
While during pregnancy, the fetus is dependent on maternal supplies of LCPs for his development and growth. Also, after birth, dietary essential fatty acids are required for optimal retina and visual maturation, therefore leading to ideal mental development and visual acuity2. LCPs will be synthetized in the body from food rich in Omega 3 & 6 such as salmon and sardine, eggs, walnuts and from some growing-up milks adapted to the child’s age3.
