A gene represents the functional and physical element of heredity. DNA in particular is what makes up genes. In turn, genes act as instructions to build up proteins. Each individual is provided with 2 copies inherited from each of his/her parent which makes up their features. 1
Personality, like eye color, is a feature that is made up genetically. But the question lies whether it is fully developed at birth, or do other factors contribute in shaping it.
In fact, it is inevitable that a child’s personality is defined by both nature and nurture. In other words, part of a kid’s personality is inherited. However, a substantial part of it is shaped by his/her daily experiences2. For example, there is no single gene that defines extroversion or introversion. It has been estimated that 20-60% is set by genetics, while the rest is due to various factors. 3 Thus, it is a multifactorial trait.
