What are 5 Common Childhood Illnesses?

Children are more susceptible to sickness due to their underdeveloped immune systems and their high exposure to germs at schools and childcare facilities.

There are many types of illnesses that can go around childcare centers and schools. Most are mild illnesses that will cause discomfort. However, there are some that can be serious. Here are five most common childhood illnesses:

  1. Common cold: Colds are caused by viruses in the upper respiratory tract. Many young children, especially those in childcare, can get 6 to 8 colds per year.1
  2. Otitis or ear infection: Many true ear infections are caused by viruses and do not require antibiotics. 1
  3. Gastroenteritis causing diarrhea. The most common cause of this illness is viruses, such as rotavirus, adenovirus or Norwalk virus. 1
  4. Sore Throat: Sore throats are common in children and can be painful. However, a sore throat that is caused by a virus does not need antibiotics. In those cases, no specific medicine is required, and your child should get better in seven to ten days. 1
  5. Bronchiolitis: Bronchiolitis is most often caused by a virus, which does not require antibiotics. Instead, most treatment recommendations are geared toward making your child comfortable with close monitoring for any difficulty in breathing, eating, or signs of dehydration. 1
