When should I take my toddler to an ORL specialist?

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, paediatric ear, nose and throat disorders are always the main reasons children visit their doctors. While most paediatricians can handle an ear infection and runny nose, here are some cases where your child needs to see an ENT (otorhinolaryngologist) specialist:

  1. Snoring: persistent snoring is not normal for a child and requires immediate concern as it can cause a lot of problems 1 ,2,4
  2. Nosebleed: when it is regular, significant and without any specific cause 4
  3. Recurrent cold 1 ,2,4
  4. Recurrent ear infection (more than 3 infections within 6 months) 2
  5. Recurrent sinus infection (more than 3 infections within a year) 1
  6. Delay in speech or potential hearing loss 3
  7. Persistent cough (for more than a month) and persistent nasal congestion 1,2
  8. Trouble swallowing 4
  9. Neck masses and lumps 4
