What is considered a safe environment for my toddler?

The need to feel secure and stable at home is important to everyone, but children especially need to feel this. Having a place where they are physically, socially and emotionally secure is imperative for healthy development and a successful future 1.

The list of horrible things that can happen in the world is endless. Despite the very dangerous world, parents are responsible to give their children a safe space to explore the world and become independent individuals. 3

First comes the child’s physical safety. In addition to providing a home free from neglect and abuse, it is important to keep children away from household dangers. These include open windows, electrical cords and outlets, hot surfaces, toxic substances, weapons and sharp objects. 2

Other tips that help the child feel safe in his daily life are: 3

  1. Maintain structure and routine: Having a structure environment and setting expectations help the child feel emotionally safe.
  2. Avoid the access to violent content: Young children aren’t able to recognize what’s real and what’s fake. Minimizing our children’s access to violent images will help them feel safer and more secure and decrease the likelihood of them acting aggressively toward others.
  3. Empower your child: Let him/her know that he/she is capable of making safe choices and help them be aware of their surroundings.
  4. Provide love and support: Talk to your child to help him/ her understand how he/she can be healthy, safe, and happy. 2
