Find the right books: Up to 73% of the children and students tend to read more if they liked the book they are reading. So, if you want your child to become a better reader, try finding a topic or a book they might actually like.
Read aloud: What might help the children understand better what they are reading is trying to read out loud the book with them. Moreover, try to encourage your child to read aloud even if he or she is struggling with a certain part of a book or a particular word.
Re-read sections that are confusing: To help your child understand more the full picture of what he is reading, you can revise together the confusing parts to make it easier for him to understand the next part of the book.
Write down words you don’t know: Your child might go through a lot of unfamiliar words and sentences and it is really important to have him write down all the new words, and encourage him to look them up in the dictionary and learn what they mean.
Discuss what your child has just read: It is very important to ask your child about his thoughts and what he has learned as you finish reading. It is very helpful to have discussions together about the book and the ideas and understand his way of understanding and dealing with the situation. (1)
