What are prebiotics and where can they be found?

Prebiotics are a form of dietary fiber that feed the “friendly” bacteria in the gut. Since the body doesn’t digest these plant fibers, they travel to the lower digestive tract to be a food source for the healthy bacteria in the gut. Incorporating prebiotics in your child’s daily diet may help promote helpful bacteria in his gut, boost his/her immune system, and maintain a healthy digestive system.

These foods are good source of prebiotics:

  1. Chicory Root
  2. Jerusalem Artichoke
  3. Dandelion Greens
  4. Garlic
  5. Leek
  6. Onion
  7. Asparagus
  8. Wheat bran
  9. Barley
  10. Banana
  11. Oats
  12. Apple
  13. Cocoa
  14. Adapted milk enriched with prebiotics
