There are many causes, but the most important ones are:
- Emotional cause: the child had a feeling of comfort and pleasure while being fed, before moving to cup
- Switching time is late or not gradual
- Tough time with transition: it might seem like major things are changing every day for the child: “That’s stressful”; surrounding him with his favourite things can reassure him that there are plenty of things in this world that he/she can count on even if his dishware is changing.
- The child doesn’t like the tip of the cup (the flexible one is the most preferable).
- The child doesn’t understand how to use the cup: infants and toddlers are accustomed to the sucking; they must learn to self-south without sucking from the cup. However, in order to achieve this, the child will usually take a little bit of time.
- If the child is not ready for transition; the parent must:
- Actively encourage the child to move to the next step
- Continuously tell them they’re is growing up when using the Sippy cup
