How to identify Autism symptoms and signs in toddlerhood?

Kids with ASD have difficulty on many levels such as social communication and interaction, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. This list of types of behaviors can help you track your child’s behavior. However, not all kids have the same reactions and behaviors, but they will show several signs. 1

In addition to language delays and behavioral differences, families may notice differences in the way their child interacts with peers. 2

Children with ASD might have some of the below behaviors: 1,2

  1. They will not point at things to show interest, for example if an airplane is flying over
  2. When you point at an object, they do not look at it
  3. They can have a problem or no interest relating to others
  4. They often make little or avoid eye contact and want to be alone
  5. They avoid being held or cuddled, or might cuddle only when they want to
  6. They might not respond to a name being called but does respond to other sounds
  7. They can be very interested in people, but they might find it hard to talk or play with them
  8. They tend to repeat or echo words or phrases said to them, or repeat words or phrases in place of normal language (this needs clarity)
  9. They can repeat some actions over and over again
  10. They have trouble adapting to any kind of change
  11. They have unusual reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound
  12. They can lose skills they once had (for example, stop saying words they were using)

Diagnosing ASD can be difficult since there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorders1.
