Should I lie down with my kids to help them fall asleep?

Learning to fall asleep on one’s own is an important skill that you can help you child learn when they are old enough, by helping them feel secure with a calming bedtime routine, and offering a comfort object, turning on a night light or learning the bedroom door is open.

It is important to encourage independent sleep in children for different reasons:

  1. Children with night independence are more confident and know how to comfort themselves when they are anxious or stressed about sleeping
  2. It can interrupt parents’ sleep
  3. Affecting parents’ relationship and compromising intimacy (1)
