Learning to fall asleep on one’s own is an important skill that you can help you child learn when they are old enough, by helping them feel secure with a calming bedtime routine, and offering a comfort object, turning on a night light or learning the bedroom door is open.
It is important to encourage independent sleep in children for different reasons:
- Children with night independence are more confident and know how to comfort themselves when they are anxious or stressed about sleeping
- It can interrupt parents’ sleep
- Affecting parents’ relationship and compromising intimacy (1)
