My child has had a drug overdose: how do I react?

A nonprescription medication overdose occurs when more medicine is taken than is safe to take.

Signs and symptoms of a mild non-prescription medication overdose:

Flushed (red) skin on dry mouth

Stomach pain, nausea and vomiting

Ringing in the ears and hearing trouble

Signs and symptoms of a severe life-threatening non-prescription medication overdose:

Fast heart rate

Vomiting blood

Trouble having a bowel movement or not able to urinate

Hallucinations or having trouble talking clearly

You should seek immediate care or call the child’s paediatrician as soon as you see one of these symptoms.
