Iron is a mineral in nature. Iron plays a different role in the body. The most important role is that iron is a key component of hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body. Without iron, the body can?t produce hemoglobin which means that tissues and organs won?t get the oxygen they need.
Lack of iron leads to anemia which has as symptoms tiredness, weakness, increased susceptibility to infection, and other symptoms.
In addition, iron is also critical for optimal brain functioning. Iron deficiency can affect growth and may lead to learning and behavioral problems.
Kids can get iron by eating foods like meat and dark green leafy vegetables. Iron is also added to some foods, such as adapted milk formulas. 1
