How do I identify a picky eater?

The symptoms of a picky eater can seem obvious:
1. Your child may push away the spoon.
2. Turn his head from the plate.
3. He might close his mouth as you try feeding him.
4. Spit out food or become cranky and tired at a mealtime.
5. Want a particular kind of food daily.

 

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean your child is picky. They can also be a sign that he’s simply full, distracted or not feeling well. However, if your child almost always shows the mentioned signs, especially whenever you try to feed him something new or a particular food, then you are dealing with a picky eater.


As long as growth and weight gain are normal, and the child is achieving his milestones, there’s usually no reason to worry. (1) However, if your child’s growth and weight are different than the norm, then you need to seek advice from a doctor.
