Vitamins and minerals are vital for your child’s well-being. There are thirteen vitamins, eight of which belong to a group called the B vitamins. There's more than one B vitamin. Here's the list: B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid. 1
The B vitamins are important in metabolic activity, which means that they help make energy and set it free when the body needs it. This group of vitamins is also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. 1
They are essential to promote brain development in children, help the release of brain chemicals like serotonin, which regulates moods, and assist in maintaining the proper functioning of the nervous system and in keeping the immune system of children healthy. Also, the B vitamins stimulate healthy skin, hair, and nails in children. 2
Which foods are rich in Vitamin B?
Fortunately, the B group vitamins are found in a large variety of foods. This means that if your child is eating a well-balanced diet, full of fresh fruit and vegetables, it is likely that they are getting adequate amounts of these vitamins. 2
Some of the important food sources of the vitamin B complex are: 1
- Whole grains, such as wheat and oats
- Fish and seafood
- Poultry and meats
- Eggs
- Dairy products, like cheese and yogurt
- Leafy green vegetables
- Beans and peas
- Milk fortified with vitamins recommended for your kids age.
Always ask your child doctor for more information especially about the adequate milk.
