What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects about 1 in 54 children according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Boys are diagnosed with ASD about 4 times more often than girls. 1 ASD is a neurodevelopmental disability that can affect the communication and behavior of the child and cause significant social challenges. You cannot differentiate kids with ASD from others, but you may spot some communication, interaction, behaviors that are different than other kids. Even their learning abilities are not like the rest of the kids of same age. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of kids with ASD can vary from gifted to severely challenged and the help required to each one is different, as some may need a lot of help in their daily lives and others need less. 2

Research shows that starting an intervention program as soon as possible can improve outcomes for many children with Autism. 1
